Qualifying for free gastric bypass surgery may be a reality for the morbidly obese, as more and more health insurance companies are recognizing a good deal when they see it. The morbidly obese, or people who weigh 40% or more their ideal body weight, are likely to cost insurance companies thousands in future medical bills if their obesity is not contained.

Because morbid obesity can lead to heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, liver disease and other significant and costly illnesses, it has become cost effective for insurance companies to provide free bypass surgery to the morbidly obese.

Gastric bypass surgery which used to be seen as a cosmetic rather than medical procedure is now covered by many insurance companies, state insurance programs and even Medicare, when certain criteria have been met. To qualify for free gastric bypass surgery with your insurance company or Medicare you may need to provide them with documentation on your previous weight loss attempts and your medical history. Working with your primary care doctor on your obesity issues will help document the problem and create a relationship where your insurance company and doctor will want to invest in your health by helping you obtain a healthy weight. Gastric bypass surgery is a life-altering procedure that can add many healthy and productive years to the life of a formerly obese person. Morbid obesity is a significant public health issue that can be cured, and gastric bypass surgery is the answer. Most morbidly obese people will not obtain a healthy body weight without medical intervention. The increases in coverage by insurance companies and Medicare are helping, although some private insurance companies still exclude gastric bypass surgery even if proven medically necessary. If you have been turned down by your insurance company for coverage, it is important to be a strong advocate for your health and get your surgeon or doctor involved.
